Eun Chun
Biography
Eun Chun works primarily with photography,
seeking to explore the meaning of “seeing.” For a period of time, she
collaborated with people with visual and hearing impairments, astronomers, and
foley artists to investigate different ways of sensing and communicating
through not only sight but also sound and touch. Working across various media
led Chun to ask herself, “What can be expressed only through photography?” Her
series Le Repos Incomplete (2017) emerged as a response to this
question.
By photographing and enlarging the works of her
late father, who was a sculptor, Chun discovered that the masses and tactile
surfaces shaped by the absent sculptor’s hands still retained a sense of
vitality. Through this process, she has continued to develop a photographic
methodology that revives “memory” and “sensation” through the “image.” When
Chun speaks of constructing narratives in her photographs, she does not mean
conveying a specific story, but rather stimulating an imagination that expands
beyond the photographic frame. While investigating the act of seeing itself,
her practice ultimately confronts what lies beyond visual perception: the
fundamental desires of photography and the camera. Since her first exhibition
at Bibliothèque Chaptal in Paris in 2010, Chun has held solo exhibitions at
Amado Art Space, BMW Photo Space, SeMA Storage, Gallery2, Perigee Gallery, PIBI
Gallery, and Primary Practice, among others. She has also participated in
numerous group exhibitions at institutions and art spaces including the Seoul
Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Jeongok Prehistory Museum, Total
Museum of Contemporary Art, DOOSAN Gallery, OCI Museum of Art, Museum SAN, HITE
Collection, and Kyobo Art Space.
Eun Chun (b. 1977) has participated in residency
programs at the MMCA Goyang Residency (2017), SeMA NANJI RESIDENCY (2020), and
Seoul Art Space Geumcheon operated by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture
(2021). She received the Amado Photography Award from Amado Art Space in 2017,
the Excellence Prize at the SongEun Art Award from the SongEun Art and Cultural
Foundation in 2018, and the Soorim Art Prize from the Soorim Cultural
Foundation in 2026. Her works are held in the collections of the Seoul Museum
of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Daegu Art Museum, GoEun Museum of
Photography, OCI Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation, SongEun Art and
Cultural Foundation, and the Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and
Contemporary Art, Korea.
