From March 26 to
May 10, PIBI Gallery presents Inkong Archive, a special exhibition
featuring archival materials and works from Inkong Gallery, a pioneering
first-generation contemporary art gallery that paved new pathways in the Korean
art scene. Marking the official transfer of the Inkong Gallery Archive to PIBI
Gallery, this exhibition has been carefully curated through extensive research
and systematic documentation. By revisiting key works and archival materials
from Inkong Gallery’s founder and director, Hwang Hyon-uk, alongside its
affiliated artists, the exhibition highlights the gallery’s pivotal role in
shaping the Korean art landscape of the 1980s and 1990s.
Established
in 1986 in Daegu by artist and curator Hwang Hyon-uk, Inkong Gallery expanded
to Seoul in 1988, opening Inkong Gallery Seoul in Daehangno and ushering in a
new chapter for contemporary Korean art. With its 8-meter-high ceilings and groundbreaking
white cube architecture, Inkong Gallery Seoul redefined the possibilities of
exhibition venues in the Korean art scene and drew significant attention. Furthermore,
the gallery played a significant role in championing artists such as Yun
Hyong-keun, Lee Ufan, Kim Yong-Ik, and Park Hyunki, whose works had yet to gain
full recognition in the mainstream art world, helping to identify and bring
attention to their artistic significance early on. Additionally, it served as a
bridge between Korea and the global art scene, introducing major contemporary
art movements through solo exhibitions of artists such as Donald Judd
(1928–1994) in 1991 and Richard Long (b. 1945) in 1993.
Inkong
Archive revisits Inkong Gallery’s landmark exhibitions
and activities of the 1980s and 1990s, presenting major works by artists
closely associated with Hwang Hyon-uk. The exhibition includes works from
Inkong Gallery’s collection and past shows, featuring Yun Hyong-keun’s
late-1980s paintings, Lee Ufan’s paintings and terracotta works, Kim Yong-Ik’s
large-scale paintings from his 1991 solo exhibition at Inkong Gallery, as well
as early 2000s pieces, Rhee Kibong’s works from Inkong Gallery Seoul’s 1988
opening exhibition, and Lee Kyojun’s charcoal drawings. In addition, a diverse
selection of archival materials—including exhibition posters, previously unseen
photographs, letters, and official documents—provides a deeper understanding of
Inkong Gallery’s significance in the Korean art scene of its time.
This
exhibition reexamines the gallery’s role in Korea’s contemporary art history,
shedding light on the experimental practices and new artistic currents that
emerged through Inkong Gallery and its artists during the 1980s and 1990s.
Moreover, it invites reflection on how the gallery’s brief yet influential
presence led to critical moments and turning points in Korean contemporary art.
Amidst the rapid growth of the Korean art market today, Inkong Archive
is expected to spark discourse on the role and significance of galleries.
피비갤러리는 3월 26일부터 5월 10일까지 한국 1세대 현대미술 전문 갤러리로 한국미술계에 새로운 길을 제시한 ‘인공갤러리’의 아카이브 자료와 작품을 소개하는 특별전시 《인공 아카이브》를 선보인다. 이번 전시는 인공갤러리의 아카이브가 피비갤러리에 이관된 것을 기념하며, 체계적인 자료 정리와 연구를 바탕으로 기획되었다. 본 전시는 인공갤러리의 설립자이자 디렉터였던 황현욱 선생과 인공갤러리의 작가로 함께했던 주요 작가들의 작품과 자료를 통해, 1980-90년대 한국 미술계에서 인공갤러리가 수행했던 선도적 역할을 재조명하는 데 초점을 맞춘다.
인공갤러리는 1986년 대구에서 작가이자 기획자인 황현욱에 의해 설립되었으며, 1988년 서울 대학로에 서울 인공갤러리를 개관하며 한국 현대미술의 새로운 장을 열었다. 서울 인공갤러리는 8m 높이에 달하는 실내 천장과 하얀 입방체 형태의 획기적인 전시 공간으로, 그 자체로서 한국 미술계에서 새로운 전시 공간의 가능성을 제시하며 많은 주목을 받았다. 또한, 인공갤러리는 윤형근, 이우환, 김용익, 박현기 등 당시 주류 미술계에서 충분한 조명을 받지 못했던 작가들의 작품을 적극적으로 소개하며 그들의 예술적 가치를 조기에 인식하고 조명하는 데 기여했다. 1991년에는 미국의 도널드 저드(Donald Judd, 1928-1994), 1993년에는 영국의 리차드 롱(Richard Long, b.1945) 개인전을 개최하며, 세계 현대미술의 주요 흐름을 한국에 알리는 중요한 매개체 역할을 했다.
《인공 아카이브》는 1980-90년대 인공갤러리의 전시와 활동을 중심으로, 황현욱 디렉터가 깊이 교류하며 협력했던 작가들의 주요 작품을 비롯하여, 윤형근의 1980년대 말 회화, 이우환의 회화 및 테라코타 작품, 1991년 인공갤러리 개인전에 소개되었던 김용익의 대형 회화와 2000년대 초 회화작품, 1988년 인공갤러리 서울 개관전에 전시되었던 이기봉의 회화, 이교준의 목탄 드로잉 등 인공갤러리 전시출품작과 갤러리 소장 작품을 중심으로 선보인다. 더불어 인공갤러리의 전시 포스터, 미공개 사진, 각종 서신 및 문서 아카이브 등을 소개하며 인공갤러리의 활동이 당시 미술계에서 어떠한 의미를 지녔는지 깊이 있게 살펴볼 예정이다.
이번 전시는 인공갤러리의 현대미술사에서의 역할을 새롭게 조명하고, 1980-90년대 한국 미술계에서 인공갤러리가 작가들과 함께 이루어낸 실험적 시도와 새로운 예술적 흐름을 탐구하는 계기가 될 것이다. 더불어, 인공갤러리의 짧지만 강렬했던 활동이 한국 현대미술사에서 중요한 사건과 변곡점을 형성했음을 확인하는 기회가 될 것이다. 오늘날 빠르게 성장하는 한국 미술 시장에서 갤러리의 역할과 가치에 대한 논의를 환기하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.
또한, 전시와 연계하여 비비스페이스 갤러리 대표 김춘화, 월간미술 전 편집장 이준희, 작가 김용익과 이교준이 참여하는 토크 프로그램이 마련된다. 이 자리에서는 인공갤러리와 긴밀한 관계를 맺었던 인사들이 모여 당시의 경험을 되짚고, 인공갤러리가 한국 미술계에 남긴 유산과 현재까지 이어지는 영향에 대해 심도 깊은 대화를 나눌 예정이다. 해당 토크 프로그램은 4월 초 진행될 예정이며, 자세한 일정은 추후 피비갤러리 공식 인스타그램을 통해 공지될 예정이다.
