PIBI Gallery welcomes the second solo exhibition of artist Nakhee Sung, Short Sleeves, from October 10th through November 9th, 2024, inviting viewers to dive into a singular visual world of spontaneous yet structural abstract paintings she has made for the last twenty-plus years. The presentation features new releases filled with far more fluid color surfaces and uninhibited organic forms, and it will prove to be a chance to discover Sung’s fresh melodic reflections of evolved illustrative expressions.
There is a common undercurrent of an organically dynamic flow of gliding colors found in each of the series – Cascade (2024), Pivot (2023), Saunter (2023), Circuit (2022), and Portamento (2022) – featured in “Short Sleeves”. The titles evoke the experience of taking a lazy stroll if read out loud, and if one were to compose a sentence with them, it could go something like, “Leisurely sauntering through the cascading greens of the forest, you find yourself pivoting away from the main trail and circuiting back, taking short, gliding portamento strides.” (Portamento is a continuous slide from one note to the next in music.) The feeling of repetitive yet unrestricted style is also entirely reflected in the artist’s work. Sung boldly puts her spontaneous feelings of strides and rhythms to canvas, utilizing the hard-edged structure of parallel and perpendicular lines. Such composition style suggests her works adhere to completely regulated rules, but in reality, her abstract paintings achieve their individualities through continuous variation, thus becoming unique images that possess their own respective rhymes. American contemporary artist Andrea Zittel (b. 1965) once said, “The only way that I think you can be free from external rules is to create your own personal set of rules that are even more rigid.”
Similarly, Sung gains freedom from everything by setting up a flexible, creative framework that only she, the artist, can control. She states she finds “joy in fine-tuning diverse possibilities within a limited framework to create something new.” To the artist, her paintings are the perfect realm where she can center herself while being entirely free from external influences and thus create her distinctive creative language and visual balance.
Sung has been creating her unique style by incorporating geometrical elements and structural modules to experiment with idiosyncratic variations and intuitively bringing hues of high saturation and brilliance to the canvas using gradation and contrast. In a deliberate effort to set this exhibition, Short Sleeves, apart from her previous shows – for which she chose abstract yet simple titles that represent the concept of her paintings – Sung opted for a headline that appears to have no direct relevance to her pieces so that viewers may approach and receive her works more fluidly. This solo presentation at the PIBI Gallery will allow audiences to discover the artist’s unique creative world and the ever-changing rules for freedom.
피비갤러리는 2024년 10월 10일부터 11월 9일까지 성낙희 개인전 《Short Sleeves》을 개최한다. 성낙희 작가가 피비갤러리에서 두 번째로 열게 되는 개인전으로, 20여년간 즉흥적이면서도 구조적인 추상 회화로 독창적 시각 언어를 발전시켜온 그의 작품 세계를 들여다보고자 한다. 이번 전시에서 처음 선보이는 신작은 그의 추상 회화가 더욱 유연해진 색면과 자유로운 유기체의 형태로 점차 변화해가고 있음을 보여준다. 《Short Sleeves》는 성낙희의 발전된 회화적 언어를 기반으로 그의 새로운 음률적 심상을 발견할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.
폭포가 흐르듯(Cascade) 흐드러진 나무 사이로 한가로이 걷는다(Saunter). 정해진 산책로를 회전하며(Pivot), 순환하고(Circuit), 매끄럽게 다음 발자국을 옮긴다(Portamento : 연주주법 중 하나로 어떤 음에서 다른 음으로 매끄럽게 옮겨가는 것을 지시한다)… 이번 전시 《Short Sleeves》에서 성낙희 작가가 선보일 각각의 시리즈 〈Cascade〉(2024), 〈Pivot〉(2023), 〈Saunter〉(2023), 〈Circuit〉(2022), 〈Portamento〉(2022)는 마치 유기체처럼 미끄러지듯 움직이는 색들의 동적인 흐름이 도드라진다. 또한 작품명을 읊다보면 유유히 산책을 하는 듯한 심상(心象)이 느껴지기도 한다. 반복적이면서도 자유로운 감각은 작가의 작업에도 고스란히 반영되어 있다. 성낙희는 자신만의 호흡과 리듬을 바탕으로 내면에서부터 생성된 즉흥적 감각을 수직•수평의 하드엣지(hard-edged) 구성을 통해 가감없이 캔버스 위로 구현해낸다. 이러한 구성 때문에 그의 추상회화는 완벽히 통제된 어떠한 규칙이 존재하는 듯하지만 끊임없는 ‘변주(變奏)’를 통해 개별성이 부여되며 결국 각자만의 음률을 가진 유일한 이미지로서 생성된다. 미국의 현대미술작가 안드레아 지텔(Andrea Zittel, b.1965)이 “일련의 개인적 규칙들을 엄격히 정해 둬야 외부의 사회적 규율에서 자유로워질 수 있다.”고 말한 바있다. 같은 맥락으로 성낙희는 오로지 작가만이 통제할 수 있는 작업적 틀을 형식화함으로써 나머지에 대한 자율성을 획득할 수 있게 된 것이다. 작가는 “선택의 폭이 많지 않은 틀 안에서 조율하여 새로운 것을 만들어내는 것이 즐겁다”고 말하며, 결국 그의 회화는 외부의 어떠한 침입없이 자신의 중심을 잡을 수 있는 완벽한 장소로서 작가에게 작용하며 그만의 독특한 조형 언어와 시각적 균형을 만들어 내고 있음을 알린다.
성낙희는 기하학적 요소와 조형적 모듈을 조합하여 독창적인 변주를 시도하고 색조의 그라데이션과 대비를 통해 채도와 순도가 높은 색감을 화면에 직관적으로 실현하며 독자적인 화법을 꾸준히 발전시켜왔다. 작가는 “이전 전시 제목들은 작품의 개념들을 추상적이면서도 간단한 단어로 정해왔다. 이번 전시의 제목에서는 작품과의 직접적인 연관과는 거리가 있는 ‘Short Sleeves’라는 단어로 선정하여 이때까지와는 다른 의미와 느낌을 주고자 했다”고 말하며 관람객들이 작품을 보다 유연하게 접하고 감각할 수 있도록 기존과는 다른 접근 방식을 채택했음을 알린다. 피비갤러리 성낙희 개인전 《Short Sleeves》에서 끊임없이 변주하고 있는 자유를 위한 규율을 발견하고 그의 독창적인 작업세계를 들여다보는 기회가 되기를 기대한다.
