Lee Jonggeon
Biography
Drawn to the relationships formed between people and spaces, artist Jonggeon Lee(b.1979) projects his observations and interpretations regarding this association on to his works. To Lee, space is not one of a stagnant state or set in stone, but is a blank, ready to be subjectively defined and open to all possibilities depending on the person that occupies it. Based on his personal experience of frequenting between South Korea and the United States since childhood, Lee fostered an interest about culture and diversity and began creating works relating to the home and community. Different experiences of geographical and cultural situations make focus on how a completely different culture is transplanted into the same space, transcending time and place. He uses the antics floor he picked up from his New England-style old wooden house in the United States as a central motif for his work. The pattern engraved works are conceived from an artificial garden projected by shrinking human aspirations for Utopia. A molded works on the floors of antique trees, overturns the boundaries of the inside and outside houses observed during our stay in the U.S., questioning the spatial concept we were thinking of.
Following his selection as the Geumho Young Artist in 2012, Lee has held five solo exhibitions at the Hudson Walker Gallery (USA), SongEun Gallery and more, and participated in numerous group exhibits including Saatchi Gallery, Whanki Museum, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art and more.
이종건(b.1979)은 사람과 공간이 맺는 관계에 주목하여 조각과 설치 작업을 해오고 있다. 작가에게 공간은 고정불변의 속성이 아니라 공간을 점유하는 사람에 따라 주관적으로 규정되고 변화무쌍하게 바뀔 수 있는 열린 영역이자 공백의 상태이다. 그는 한국과 미국을 오가던, 서로 다른 환경과 공간에서의 경험을 토대로 문화의 다양성에 관심을 갖고 집과 공동체에 대한 작업을 이어왔다. 지리적, 문화적 상황에 대한 상이한 체험은 작가로 하여금 시간과 장소를 초월해 전혀 다른 문화가 같은 공간에 이식되어 고착되는 바를 조명하게 한다. 작가는 자연을 실내공간으로 옮겨놓기 위해 사용했던 벽지나 카펫 문양을 새긴 설치작업과 공간과 형태에 대해 관찰한 바를 나무와 브론즈, 판화작품으로 선보이는데, 건물의 외벽 일부를 전시공간으로 옮겨오거나, 커튼처럼 걸어두기도 하면서 우리가 생각하고 있던 공간 개념에 의문을 제기하고 공간에 대한 의심과 소외를 시각적으로 다루고 있다.
이종건은 2012년도에 금호 영아티스트로 선발된 이후 미국의 허드슨 워커 갤러리, 송은 갤러리 등을 비롯한 5회 개인전과 함께 환기미술관, 사치갤러리, 경기도미술관 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다.
