Lee Eunsun
Biography
Eunsun Lee (b. 1978) explores how formative languages such as dots, lines, and sides are visualized in space—across various media including sculpture, photography, and video. Her long-term interest in human relationships has manifested itself in her installation works. She finds interdependent and serial features in simple games like hopscotch and origami. On the other hand, she pays attention to the way several variables steer the game in an unexpected direction. Recently, Lee has discovered that formative elements based on prescribed rules within a set space are not replaced by a logical communication system; further, uncontrollable emotions are revealed in the process. As a result, she is currently working on installation pieces that expand intimate stories between individuals and space into new space. Viewers are invited to move across the space and become part of the work. In the newly constructed space, viewers create their own experience independent of the artist, not to mention a new ‘relationship’ with the space. Eunsun Lee continues to explore her own aesthetics of relationships through the constant variation of elements surrounding people and space.
Lee has held eight solo exhibitions begins at La space, Chicago, 2006. Lee participated in numerous group exhibitions including in Nefs Masterpiece 2012, 2013, Museum of Art Seoul National University, Amore Pacific Museum, Taehwa River Eco Art Festival, D Museum, Daegu Contemporary Art Festival in Ganjeong, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art.. Lee's works are housed in Shinsegae Gallery, Walkerhill Hotel, ALEX72 Hotel and more.
이은선(b.1978)은 조각, 사진, 영상 등 매체를 넘나들며 점, 선, 면과 같은 조형 언어가 공간에서 시각화되는 방식을 탐구하고 있다. 작가는 사람들 사이에서 맺어지는 관계에 지속적인 관심을 가져왔으며 이를 공간 설치 작업으로 연결한다. ‘땅따먹기’, ‘종이접기’와 같은 단순한 구조의 놀이에서 상호 의존적이면서도 연쇄적으로 나타나는 속성을 발견하거나 반대로 여러 변수에 의해 예기치 못한 방향으로 전개되는 놀이의 상황에 주목한다. 최근 이은선은 규정된 공간 안에서 정해진 규칙에 의거한 조형 요소가 논리정연한 소통 체계로 치환되지 않을뿐더러 그 과정에서 통제할 수 없는 감정이 드러난다는 점을 발견하고, 개인이 관계 맺는 공간과의 내밀한 이야기를 새로운 공간으로 확장해가는 설치 작업을 진행중이다. 이은선의 작업에서 관람자는 공간을 오가며 작품의 일부가 된다. 작가에 의해 새로이 구성된 공간에서 관람자는 작가와 무관한 자신만의 경험을 만들고, 공간과 새로운 ‘관계’를 창조한다. 이은선은 사람과 공간을 둘러싼 요소들의 끊임없는 변주를 통해 자신만의 관계의 미학을 만들어가고 있다.
이은선은 2002년 이화여자대학교 조소과를, 2007년 아트 인스티튜트 오브 시카고 석사(필름, 비디오, 뉴미디어 전공)를 마쳤다. 2006년 시카고 LG Space에서의 첫 개인전을 가졌고 2013년 갤러리조선 개인전으로 한국에서의 활동을 시작하였다. 이후 카이스트 리서치앤아트, 피비갤러리, 레스빠스71, 휘슬, 이풀실내정원, 디스위켄드룸, 티퍼런스 서울 등에서 개인전을, 원앤제이갤러리, 북서울시립미술관, 디뮤지엄, 뮤지엄산, 이풀실내정원 등에서 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 이은선의 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 신세계 갤러리, 워커힐 호텔, 알렉스72 호텔 등에 소장되어 있다.
