Kim Hyunsung
Biography
Hyunsung Kim(b. 1986), who has been doing metal work in diverse areas applying modern approaches in design and form while adhering to traditional methods to produce tableware to furniture, has been familiar with metal since childhood growing up under his metalworker father. Becoming a metal artist after graduating from Hanyang University as a metal design major, he proceeded to earn Craft Trend Fair’s the Artist of the Year award in 2013. His early works involved making various forms of tableware in metal, creating a new style of tools by designing in detail dishes or cutlery depending on their use and function.
Focusing particularly on the warm feeling given off by copper, Kim created his signature piece, the copper coffee dripper, utilizing the high heat conductivity of the metal and its sensitivity to the external environment. He also attempted to experiment with the practicality and aesthetic impression of metal as a substance by using iron, tin, silver, and brass to create various tableware items as art pieces. In addition, by using a relatively simple-functioned candlestick, as opposed to the highly functional eating utensils and dishes, he explored various forms of design that went beyond the general. Later, Kim expanded his field of small and meticulous metalwork to include furniture, stylishly conveying his language of form by using the size of things and metal broadly expressed within a space.
Hyunsung Kim (b. 1986) has graduated Hanyang University with a B.A. (2011) and M.A. (2013) in metal design. He has held a solo exhibition in 2016 at Sikijang following his first solo show Metal Craft (2014, Gallery AWON), and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Ancestral Rites for Modern Times (2018), Arumjigi, Delicious Design (2016), Keum Art Project, Munich, Germany, Typojanchi(2015), Culture Station Seoul 284, and Kitchen in Fantasy: Fissler 170th Anniversary Exhibition (2015), Horim Museum. He has also been involved in Amorepacific’s Osulloc Teaware product development and Maison & Objet (2012), Paris Nord Villepinte, Villepinte, France. Kim has been given Craft Trend Fair’s the Artist of the Year award (2013, Minister Prize, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), Yoolizzy Craft Museum’s Artist of the Year award (2016), and Onyang Museum’s Onyang Craft Contest Grand Prize (2019).
김현성(b.1986)은 금속공예를 다룸에 있어서 전통 공예 방식을 유지하면서도 디자인이나 조형적인 부분에서 현대적인 접근을 시도해오고 있다. 작가는 식도구부터 가구에 이르기까지 다양한 영역에 공예의 손을 담가왔다.
김현성은 세공사였던 아버지의 영향으로 유년시절부터 금속에 친숙한 환경에서 자랐으며, 한양대 금속공예과에 진학 후 금속 공예가가 되어 2013년 공예트랜드페어에서 올해의 작가상을 수상했다. 그의 초기작업들은 다양한 형태의 식도구를 금속으로 다루는 것이었는데, 접시나 커트러리 등 한식과 양식을 통한 쓰임과 용도에 따라 섬세하게 디자인하여 새로운 감각의 도구를 선보였다. 특히 작가는 구리가 주는 따스한 느낌에 주목하고 외부 환경에 민감한 재료적 특성과 높은 열전도율이라는 특징을 살려 ‘구리드리퍼’라는 대표적 작품을 만들기도 했다. 뿐만 아니라, 강철과 주석, 은과 놋쇠 등을 이용하여 각종 테이블웨어를 작품화 하면서 금속이라는 물질에 실용성과 심미성을 실험적으로 다루고자 했다. 또한 촛대 작업을 진행하며 기능성이 강했던 식도구에 비해 단순한 기능을 가진 촛대로 다양한 디자인적 형태의 한계를 뛰어 넘는 시도를 하기도 했다. 이후 작가는 작고 섬세한 금속공예의 영역을 가구로 확대하며 사물의 크기와 공간 속에서 확장되어 다뤄지는 금속을 통해 그만의 감각적인 조형언어를 보여주고 있다.
김현성은 한양대학교 금속디자인학과에서 석사(2013)와 학사(2011)를 졸업했다. 첫 개인전인 ’다섯개의 상’(2014, 갤러리아원)에 이어 2016년 식기장에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 아름지기에서 ‘가가례(家家): 집집마다 다른 제례의 풍경’(2018), 독일 뮌헨에서 ‘Keum Art Project’로 ‘Delicious Design’(2016), 문화역서울에서 ‘타이포잔치’(2015), 호림미술관에서 ‘Kitchen in fantasy -휘슬러 170주년 기념전시’(2015) 등의 단체전에 참여하였다. 또한 아모레퍼시픽의 ‘오설록 티웨어’ 상품개발에 참여하였고(2012), 프랑스 파리 Paris Nord Villepinte의 ‘Maison & Objet’(2012)에 참가하였다. 2013년 공예트렌드 페어 올해의 작가상(문화부 장관상), 2016년 유리지공예관에서 올해의 작가상, 2019년 온양민속박물관에서 온양공예열전 최우수상을 수상했다.
