Jazoo Yang has actively worked across various countries, primarily in Korea and Europe, engaging in painting, installation, performance, projects, and live painting, without limiting herself to specific locations or genres. The artist extensively collects unconventional materials from the places she stays and actively incorporates them into her work. These materials go beyond being mere means of expression, carrying the temporality and memory of a place onto the canvas while forming a distinctive visual language shaped by the artist’s physical gestures and sensory experience. Yang directly immerses herself in her surroundings, observing her inner self, the environment, and people. She carefully considers how to incorporate the traces embedded in places and materials into her work. This approach has remained consistent throughout her practice across different countries, with the participatory project <DOTS> serving as a representative example. It began on the facade of an old neighborhood in Busan threatened by redevelopment, and later evolved in response to issues surrounding refugees and border conflicts in Russia, before expanding into a collaborative project involving refugees and local residents in Besançon, France, and continuing on to Norway and Berlin. In this way, <DOTS> is not a fixed format but a project that transforms in response to the social context of each place, reflecting Yang’s ongoing exploration of site-specificity and communal connections.

Jazoo Yang (b. 1979) is an artist working primarily on participatory projects. She held her first solo exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin in 2011 and has since exhibited extensively in countries including Korea, China, France, and Germany. She held a solo exhibition at Space CAN in Beijing in 2014, presented the 'Immanence series' at Space K in Gwacheon, Korea, in 2019, and showed the 'DOTS series' at the Grand Palais Immersif in Paris in 2024. She has continued to expand her practice with solo exhibitions at the Maison de l'Architecture in Besançon, France (2018), Soma Art Space in Berlin (2021), and the Goethe-Institut in Sofia, Bulgaria (2025). In August 2026, she will present a solo exhibition, Everything That Will Remain, Something That Will Never Disappear, at PIBI Gallery.

Yang has participated in group exhibitions such as a performance at the Tangyang Art Center in China (2015), the 1st Gwangju Media Art Festival (Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, 2016), Saatchi Gallery in London (2019), Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin (2022), the Sea Art Festival in Busan, Korea (2023), the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (2024), Eli Klein Gallery in New York (2024), and the Urban Nation Museum in Berlin (2025). Yang's works are held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, the Musée du Temps in Besançon, France, and Kolon, among others.

양자주는 한국과 유럽을 중심으로 여러 나라에서 회화와 설치, 퍼포먼스, 프로젝트 및 라이브 페인팅에 이르기까지 장소와 장르의 한계를 두지 않고 작업을 전개해왔다. 주로 머무는 지역에서 비전통적인 재료를 광범위하게 채집하고 이를 적극적으로 활용한다. 이러한 재료는 단순한 표현의 수단을 넘어 장소가 지닌 시간성과 기억을 화면으로 끌어들이며, 작가의 신체적 행위와 감각이 결합된 고유한 언어를 형성한다. 작가는 몸소 현장으로 들어가 본인의 내면과 주변 환경, 인간을 관찰하고 장소와 재료가 지닌 흔적을 작품 안으로 끌어들이기 위해 고심하며 작업에 임한다. 이러한 태도는 다양한 나라에서 전개해온 작업 전반에서 일관되게 드러나는데, 참여형 프로젝트인 <DOTS>가 대표적이다. 이 작업은 재개발 위기에 놓인 부산의 한 오래된 동네 외벽에서 시작되어, 이후 러시아에서는 난민과 국경 분쟁의 문제로, 프랑스 브장송에서는 난민과 지역 주민이 함께한 공동 작업으로 확장되며 노르웨이, 베를린 등지로 이어졌다. 이처럼 <DOTS>는 하나의 고정된 형식이 아니라 각 지역이 처한 사회적 맥락에 반응하며 변주되는 방식으로, 작가가 장소성과 공동체적 연결을 지속적으로 탐구해온 과정을 보여준다.

참여형 프로젝트를 중심으로 활동하는 양자주(b.1979) 작가는 2011년 독일 베를린 쿤스트할레 베타니엔에서 첫 개인전을 시작으로 이후, 한국, 중국, 프랑스, 독일 등 다양한 국가에서 활발하게 전시 활동을 이어오고 있다. 2014년에는 베이징 스페이스 캔에서 개인전을 열었으며, 2019년 한국 과천의 스페이스 K에서는 ‘Immance 시리즈’를, 2024년 파리 그랑팔레 임메르시프 전시관에서 ‘DOTS 시리즈’를 선보였다. 이후에도 2018년 프랑스 브장송 건축 박물관,  2021년 베를린 소마 아트 스페이스, 2025년 괴테 인스티튜트(소피아, 불가리아) 등에서 개인전을 통해 지속적으로 새로운 작업세계를 보여주고 있다.  2026년 8월 피비갤러리에서 개인전 《남아 있을 모든 것, 영원히 사라지지 않을 어떤 것》을 선보인다. 주요 그룹전으로는 2015년 중국 탕량 아트센터에서의 퍼포먼스 참여를 비롯해, 2016년 제 1회 광주 미디어 아트 페스티벌(아시아 문화의 전당, 광주), 2019년 런던 사치 갤러리, 2022년 베타니엔 쿤스트할레(베를린, 독일), 2023년 바다미술제(부산, 한국), 2024년 부산현대미술관(부산, 한국), 엘리클레인 갤러리(뉴욕, 미국), 2025 어반네이션 미술관(베를린, 독일) 등에서 활발한 활동을 선보여왔다. 작품은 부산현대미술관, 브장송 타임 뮤지엄(프랑스), 코오롱 등에 소장되어 있다.
