Hyangmi Lee (1946 – 2007) is known for her drip technique works and exploration into “color as an objét” and spatiality. She graduated from Hongik University as a Western painting major in 1971, after which she submitted works for the Founding Exhibition of the Korean Woman Artist Association (1973, Shinsaegae Gallery) and Exposé (1973, Daegu Department Store). Later, she also steadily participated in experimental group shows of young artists in Seoul, Daegu, and more. She founded the experimental art group “35/128” in 1975 with her colleagues in her hometown of Daegu, where she engaged in exploratory opportunities going against convention and actively created works with a repetitive dripping style to move away from existing painting formats. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1981 at the MAKI Gallery, Tokyo, a show she held for self-legitimizing her ten-plus years as an artist. By this time, she had already been substantially evaluated by the art world for “color itself,” her unique painting style created by dripping paint on canvas. She gave the term “heulim,” which means dripping, to describe liberally visualizing things of daily life , which quickly became the core visual language that symbolizes her artistic world. “Color itself” was “the fruit of her avant-garde labor visualized through the paint freely trickling down. Thus, color as a material combined with chance and intention becomes more than just itself, but an objét of hue.” She strived to make her own formative language using color without becoming included in any mainstream trends of the time, like informalism, op art, and geometrical abstract paintings. Lee Hyung-Mi appeared to handle her canvas more autonomously from her fifth solo exhibition (1988) following her study abroad. However, the lack of surviving works makes it difficult to assess how her styles changed beyond that point.

Hyangmi Lee(1948~2007) earned BFA at Hongik University and MFA at The art school of Hartford. The artist presented her own individual idiom at the flow of Korean Contemporary Art, where monochrome paintings and Experimental Art is co-existed. She has held several solo exhibition at FALLSVIEW Gallery, Kwanhoon Gallery, Maki Gallery and more. Lee take a major role in region’s Contemporary Art by creating Avant-Garde Art group ‘35/128’ and also take a part in Daegu Contemporary Art Festival. She participated in several group exhibitions like the 1st Ecole de Seoul, the 2nd Daegu Contemporary Art Festival and so on.

The artist’s works are collected in Institutions like National Museum of Modern Contemporary Art, University of Hartford Museum, Seoul Press Center, NAPANOLH Church, Museum of Contemporary Art in Hongik University, Daegu Art Museum etc.

이향미(1948-2007)는 흘림 기법을 활용한 회화 작업을 선보이며 ‘색채가 지닌 오브제성’과 공간성을 탐구하였다. 1971년 홍익대 서양화과를 졸업하고 《한국여류화가회 창립전》(신세계화랑, 1973)에 참여했으며 《엑스포제》(대구백화점 화랑, 1973)에 <흘림>(1973)이라는 작품을 출품하였다. 이후 서울, 대구 등지에서 열리는 젊은 작가들의 실험적인 단체전에 꾸준히 참여하였다. 그는 고향 대구에서 동료들과 실험미술 단체 ‘35/128’을 창립하여(1975) 지역 기반 활동도 활발하게 이어나갔다. 이들은 기존의 관습에 저항하는 실험적인 작업을 선보이고자 하였고, 이향미도 본격적으로 반복적인 흘림을 통해 기성 회화에서 벗어나고자 했다. 이향미는 첫 개인전을 1981년에 도쿄 마키화랑에서 개최했는데 이때는 <색 자체>에 대한 미술계의 평가를 어느 정도 받은 시점으로, 작가는 10여 간의 활동에 대한 ‘개인의 정당성’ 을 위해 전시를 개최하였다. 이향미의 <색 자체>는 캔버스에 물감을 흘리는 행위를 통해 제작된다. 작가는 일상의 것을 자유롭게 시각화시킬 수 있는 것을 ‘흘림’이라고 일컬었는데, 이는 곧 작가의 작품 세계를 상징하는 핵심적인 시각언어가 되었다. <색 자체>는 ”자유롭게 흘러가는 물감을 통해 작가가 시각화하고자 했던 전위 실현의 결과였으며 이로써 재료 차원의 색이 우연과 의도로 인해 겹치며 단순한 색을 넘어 하나의 색채 오브제로 치환되는 셈이다.” 그는 당대 주류의 흐름이던 앵포르멜, 옵아트, 기하학적 추상회화 중 어디에도 속하지 않으면서도 색채를 통해 스스로의 조형 언어를 만들고자 하였다. 유학 후 개최한 제5회 개인전(1988) 때부터 이향미는 회화 화면을 좀더 주체적으로 다루고자 하였던 것 같다. 그러나 이후 작업이 어떻게 개진되었는지 남아 있는 작품이 많지 않아 아쉽게도 변화 양상에 대한 연구는 부족하다.

이향미(1948-2007)는 대구출생으로 1971년 홍익대학교 서양화과, 1986년 하트퍼드 대학원(The art school of Hartford)을 졸업했다. 이향미 작가는 모노크롬 추상회화인 단색화와 ‘AG(한국아방가르드협회), ’ST(Space and Time)’ 등 실험미술이 공존한 당대 한국 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 독창적인 어법을 선보이며, 1981년 일본 도쿄 마키 갤러리에서의 개인전을 시작으로 관훈미술관, 조셀로프 갤러리(미국), 갤러리 코리아(미국), 힐튼화랑, 펄스뷰 갤러리(미국), 대구문화예술회관에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 제 2회 앙데팡당전(1974, 국립현대미술관), 제 1회 에꼴드서울(1975, 국립현대미술관), 제 2회 대구 현대미술제(1976, 대구) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 국립현대미술관, University of Hartford Museum, 서울 프레스 센터, NAPANOLH Church, 대구문화예술회관, 홍익대학교 박물관, 경복대학교 미술관, 대구미술관 등 다수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.
