Lee Hyein
Biography
Hyein Lee (b. 1981) bases her paintings on combining various environmental conditions and personal moments and memories under the temporal concept of “the present.” Depicting her surroundings and interactions of where she paints, Lee’s artistic practices transcend existing concepts of landscape by embodying "time" and "space," as locations become imbued with meaning. For this, Lee installs paintings or other specific objects to convey a new concept of the setting, place, and time. Her current scenic works about her relevant subjects are not only about the physical location but also address an expanding concept of space through virtual meeting platforms and data devices such as FaceTime and Zoom. The artist’s stance as such allows the existing landscapes and objects of painting to assume an active sense of identity through observing the world she is in and for her work to continue to forge a relationship with “the now.”
Hyein Lee graduated from Seoul National University with BFA and MFA in Painting. Recent solo exhibition includes L. Practice (2021) at Museum Head, Seoul; One day, stepping on the weather (2020) at Gallery KICHE, Seoul; Sync (2018) at Sindoh Art Space, Seoul; A Travel Journal (2016) at Sophie’s Tree, New York; and The Completed Moments (2015) at Doosan Gallery, New York. Her works have been presented in numerous group exhibitions at PIBI GALLERY, Seoul (2022); Art Center Art Moment, Seoul (2021); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (2021, 2015, 2008); Busan Museum of Art, Busan (2021); Hite Collection (2021, 2016); Daegu Art Museum, Daegu (2022); Art Sonje Center, Seoul (2019, 2017); and The National Art Center, Tokyo (2015). Lee’s works are in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Seoul; Daegu Art Museum, Daegu; Busan Museum of Art, Busan; and Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, Busan. Hyein Lee currently lives and works in Seoul.
이혜인(b.1981)의 풍경은 종종 ‘사생’이란 형식에 기반한다. 하지만, 작가에게 사생이란 눈앞의 경치를 온전히 재현하는 일이기보다는, 자신이 통제할 수 없는 환경에 신체를 노출하여 겪게 되는 충돌과 화합, 그 조건과 과정을 옮겨내는 일이다. 이는 안온한 스튜디오를 벗어나 대상을 찾기 위한 개인의 여정부터 캔버스 위에 대상을 옮겨내는 일까지 모든 과정을 포괄하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 작가가 온몸으로 받아내고, 저항하던 과정적/환경적 조건과 우발적 사건들은 회화적 이미지로 귀결되지만, 이는 매 순간 그의 신체를 잠식하던 환경적 조건에서 비롯된 심상과 정서 등을 회화적으로 번역, 표출한 것이라 할 수 있다. 그렇기에 이 풍경은 작가의 신체에 대한 방증이자 동시에 회화 작가로서의 지금, 여기를 표상하는 자리라 할 수 있다. 그렇게 그의 풍경은 회화에게 허락된 최초의 공간인 캔버스를 넘어 모종의 공간에 대한 기억을 자극하고, 관객 개별의 시공, 장소로 확장한다.
이혜인(b.1981)은 개인의 신체가 주어진 환경적 조건을 즉각적으로 지각하는 방식으로서 그리기에 대해 관심을 가지고 작업한다. 《완벽한 날들》 (대구미술관, 2013), 《Sync》 (신도문화공간, 2018), 《어느 날, 날씨를 밟으며》 (갤러리 기체, 2020) 등의 개인전을 가졌으며, 《아티스트 파일 2015: 동행》 (국립현대미술관, 도쿄국립신미술관, 2015), 《Will you be there?》 (Project Fulfill Art Space, Taipei, 2018), 《밤이 낮으로 변할 때》 (아트선재센터, 2019), 《재난과 치유》 (국립현대미술관 서울관, 2021) 등의 전시에 참여했다. 베를린 쿤스틀러하우스베타니엔(2012), 금천예술공장 (2014), 두산갤러리 뉴욕 레지던시프로그램(2015) 등에 참여하였다.
