Jiyoung Yoon
Biography
Jiyoung Yoon specializes in the medium of sculpture, producing work that inquires about our system of perception, posing questions about things we see and believe, invisible matters that control our system of belief, and things that exist, however uncertain. Yoon’s work is seemingly obscure but is based on the logic built within her own system, earning its rightful value, significantly enough, not by the symbolic system of the surface-visible image but by the internal structure that supports that form. To make this possible, the artist removes the subject’s volume leaving only its external skin, or displays a planar figure on a surface to invoke the unidentifiable hidden virtual space under the outer layer of the work. The surface of a shapely figure and the form of some created space spread across the interior are visual phenomena. They are much like a sculptural body that activates a non-existing space. Ultimately to Yoon, an image is a fiction that shrouds the interior’s truth, and those things with no physical volumes or dissected planar figure sculpture pieces visualize the shortcomings of the trust and faith bestowed on visibility.
Jiyoung Yoon(b.1984) earned BFA at Hongik University, and MFA at School of the Art Institute Chicago, both majoring in Sculpture. Beginning with the first solo exhibition at Mana Contemporary Chicago, she has held solo exhibitions at Being&Thing Archive and ONE and J. Gallery and take a part in group exhibition at Nationla Museum of Modern Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Art Seonjae Center, Nam June Paik Art Center, PIBI Gallery, etc. Also, she participated in residency program like Nanji Residency Seoul Museum of Art, MMCA Goyang Residency, Incheon Art Platform and so on. The Artist’s works are collected at Seoul Museum of Art and Suwon Museum of Art.
조각을 주요 매체로 작업하는 윤지영은 우리의 인식체계에 대한 질문을 바탕으로 보는 것과 믿는 것, 우리의 믿음 체계를 작동하는 보이지 않는 기제와 불확실한, 하지만 존재하는 것에 대해 의문을 제기한다. 그의 작업은 겉으로는 모호한, 하지만 그만의 체계 안에서 구축된 논리에 기반하며, 여기에서 중요한 것은 겉으로 드러난 표면, 이미지의 상징적 체계보다는 그 형상을 지탱하는 내부의 구조로부터 당위를 획득한다. 이를 위해 작가는 가시적 차원에서 파악 불가한 현상 이면을 환기하기 위해 대상의 부피를 소거하거나, 평면 위에 형상의 전개도를 펼치는 방식으로 표피 아래 가상의 공간을 환기하게끔 한다. 그리고 이렇듯 형태를 가진 것의 표면과 내부를 가로지르는 모종의 가설된 공간으로서의 형상은 가시적 현상으로 존재하지 않는 공간을 작동시키는 신체, 퍼포머와도 같다.
윤지영(b.1984)은 홍익대학교에서 조소를 전공하고, 미국 시카고예술대학에서 조각으로 석사학위를 받았다. Mana Contemporary Chicago 에서의 첫 개인전 이후 빙앤띵 아카이브, 원앤제이 갤러리에서 개인전을 열었으며, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 아트선재센터, 백남준아트센터, 피비갤러리 등 다수의 단체전에 참가했다. 또한 서울시립미술관 난지미술창작스튜디오, 국립현대미술관 고양레지던시, 인천아트플랫폼 등 다수의 레지던시 프로그램에 참여했으며, 작가의 작품은 서울시립미술관과 수원미술관에 소장되어있다.
