Minsu Kim (b. 1990) catches and observes glimpses of memories of her daily life and expresses them on canvas with a sense of improvisation. Memories fade and become obscure with time. As if conveying this quality, Kim overlaps and blends multiple times and spaces from her experiences on one canvas, recreated into time and space or perhaps forms that once existed and never existed. But rather than representing a strange space of an alternate dimension, the recreated screen appears like an ordinary scene that anyone may recall as their own, stirring a sense of reminiscence in the viewer. The artist clips, cuts, and pastes various materials, such as stickers, pieces of fabric, thread, etc., and uses them with paint while, at times, working on a canvas after flipping it inside out, all of which a projection of her playful attitude in actively setting up big and small changes in a repetitive everyday life. In her canvases created this way, we also find the artist’s uninhibited perspective of not viewing the same thing in the same way.

Minsu Kim (b. 1990) earned a BFA and MFA in Fine Arts in 2015 and 2018, respectively, at Korea National University of Arts. Her 2017 show at Gallery175 was the first of many solo exhibitions, including those at Show and Tell, Gasamroljieul, OAOA Gallery, and Millimeter Millgram, in addition to various group presentations, including those at SeMA Warehouse, Jeongok Prehistory Museum, and the HITE Collection. 

김민수(b.1990)는 지나간 일상의 기억 속 형상을 붙잡아 관찰한 후 즉흥적 감각으로 화면에 표현해낸다. 지나간 기억은 시간이 갈수록 흐릿해지고 모호해진다. 이런 특성을 담듯 작가가 경험한 다양한 시간대와 공간들이 중첩되고 혼재되어 한 화면에 나타나면서, 존재했지만 존재하지 않는 시공간 혹은 형상으로 재생성된다. 다만, 재생성된 화면은 다른 차원의 낯선 공간을 의미한다기보다는 누구나 저마다의 장면을 떠올릴 수 있는 일상의 풍경으로 비춰지며, 보는 이로 하여금 회상의 감각을 유도한다. 작가는 스티커, 천 조각, 실 등 다양한 재료를 오리고 자르고 붙이며 물감과 함께 사용하기도 하고, 캔버스 천의 앞뒷면을 뒤집어 사용해 보기도 하는데, 이는 반복되는 일상에서 크고 작은 변화를 능동적으로 설정하는 작가의 놀이적 태도가 투영되어 있다. 또한 이러한 화면에서 같은 것을 같게 보지 않는 작가의 자유로운 시선을 발견할 수 있다.

김민수(b.1990)는 2015년 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과, 2018년 동 대학원 조형예술과를 졸업했다. 2017년 갤러리175 개인전을 시작으로, 쇼앤텔, 가삼로지을, 오에이오에이, 밀리미터 밀리그람에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 서울시립미술관 세마창고, 전곡선사박물관, 하이트컬렉션 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다.
