Seung-il Chung has been involved with projects that contemplate physical properties of materials and addresses spatial and architectural elements through various mediums. In recent installation works he has been mainly using photographs and mirrors, about one of which he said ‘mirrors are intriguing materials in that they reflect “me” as I look around the art work as well as the surrounding space where it is installed.’ In one of his latest work “Additional Architecture (2018)”, Chung experiments with the identity of the mirror that is ‘visible but invisible’ because it disappears by absorbing its surroundings but gives back a reflection that we can see. In “The Beautiful Technology (2015)” Chung offers audiences the chance to experience a multi-angle perspective from a single spot by changing the installation angle of a mirror structure. Chung experiments with the merging of spaces in “The Inner of the Exterior (2010)” by placing a miniature structural replication of a house made of mirror in front of the actual one, so that the house’s exterior landscape is reflected inward and the outside is brought inside. In and of itself what is reflected on the mirror’s surface brings about a visual confusion to onlookers making it difficult to understand the actual form of the source, but it is precisely this confusion that leads audiences to communicate with the neighboring spaces. The mirror may seem like it is integrated with its surrounding spaces because it absorbs them but in actuality there is a sense of incongruity as the space in question is rather disparate. The mirror manages to reflect numerous subjects without compromising itself or distort spaces while maintaining its integrity. Chung takes full advantage of such qualities of the mirror and uses them to throw questions at us regarding things we have failed to adequately recognize or prejudices of solidified perspectives.

다양한 매체를 다루며 재료의 물성을 탐구하거나 공간과 건축적인 요소들을 다루는 프로젝트를 진행해 온 정승일은 최근의 설치작업들에서 거울과 사진을 주로 사용해왔는데, 이에 대해 작가는 ‘거울은 작품이 설치된 공간의 주변 환경과 작품을 관람하는 “나”를 다각도로 반사하기 때문에 흥미로운 재료’라고 말한 바 있다. 최근의 “추가적 건축 (2018)”에서는 주변을 흡수해 자신(미러 조형물)은 사라지지만 주변 공간을 반사하게 하여 ‘보이면서도 보이지 않는’ 존재에 대한 실험을 하였고, “아름다운 기술 (2015)“에서는 미러 입체물의 설치 각도를 달리해 다각도의 시점을 한 지점에서 느낄 수 있는 경험을 제공한 바 있다. "외부의 내면 (2010)“에서는 집과 똑 같은 구조의 축소된 미러 건축물을 집 앞에 놓아 외부를 반영시키는 풍경을 집에 비추게 함으로써 외부의 세계가 내부로 전이되는 공간 병합을 실험하였다. 미러의 표면에 반사되는 현상은 그 자체로 시각적인 혼란스러움을 야기하며 관람자가 본래의 형태를 인지하기 힘들게 하지만 그 혼란으로 오히려 주변의 공간과 소통하게 한다. 주변 환경을 흡수한 거울은 공간과 동화되는 것처럼 보이지만 그 공간은 이질적이어서 위화감을 주기도 한다. 정승일은 수많은 대상을 반영하지만 본래의 자신은 변화되지 않는 속성, 공간을 일그러뜨리지만 자신은 일그러지지 않는 거울의 본질을 철저히 활용하여 우리가 제대로 인식하지 못했거나 고착되어온 시선의 편견에 대해 물음표를 던져왔다.

또한 작가는 조형의 기본 요소인 점, 선, 면, 그리고 입체의 원리에 대하여 언급한 바 있다. 점을 연결하면 선이 되고, 선을 연결하면 면이 되고, 면을 연결하면 입체가 되는 원리. 반대로 입체를 분할하면 면이 되고, 면을 분할하면 선들이 되며, 선을 분할하면 점들이 되는 원리. 작가는 우리 삶의 가까이에 있는 조형의 원리와 구성요소들이 삶과 예술을 통해 드러나길 원하며 작업의 주요한 모티브로 삼고 있다. 빛, 그림자, 본질, 실재, 자아, 공간과 장소성, 그리고 건축적 요소들은 작가의 지속적인 관심사인데 이번 전시에서는 이를 한층 가시화하는 작품을 선보인다.
