Lee Youngjun

Biography
Based in Korea and Germany, artist Lee Young Jun (b.1983) has been continuing his exploration into painting using a geological stratum-like layering technique. Layer upon layer, he strategically builds images on his canvas, adhering to personally set rules while freely filling individual levels with spontaneous moves such as unconsciously made repetitive patterns, meaningless shapes born of rhythmical lines, and more. The coexistence of purpose and coincidence in a single frame adds an odd sense of tension. In a single work, Lee uses various painting materials and techniques such as oil paint, acrylic paint, pencil, silkscreen, airbrush, etc. – or visual elements like dot, line, surface, color, pattern, etc. – elements to separate one layer from the other. He goes even further to, at times, erase, cut, and add on a portion of the images to create points where the distinction between the strata is blurred. The repeated efforts of fusing and dismantling finish Lee’s frame into a complex landscape of varied forms and colorful combinations, much like the exposed eroded terrain seen from above.
Lee Young Jun earned a B.A. in Fine Arts at SungKyunKwan University in 2012, after which he acquired a Diplom for Fine Arts at AdBk München, Germany, in 2020. Starting with his show at Galerie Sebastianskapelle Ulm e.V, Germany, in 2023, Lee has had solo exhibitions at Space Cadalogs, Seoul, the same year, at Gallery Jiwooheon, Seoul in 2024, and at PIBI Gallery in 2025(forth coming). He has also participated in various group exhibitions at IDFX, the Netherlands, Germany’s Kunstraum-Leitershofen and Galerie der Künstler, Prompt Project, Seoul, Everyart, Seoul, and more. He has been selected for Artist in Residence Munich from the Ministry of Culture of Munich, Germany (2023 - 2026), the Bavarian Award for the Advancement of the Arts, Germany (2023 – 2024), a special award from the German Arts Fund NEUSTART KULTUR, and the Free State of Bavaria scholarship program (2021).
