Sen Chung
Biography
Sen Chung depicts slices of nature in lines and colors using pencil and oil pastels, exploring the act of drawing and the essence of painting through his minimal forms, abstract brush touches, and reserved hues. He adds geometrical elements and colors to an almost monochromatic background inspired by the Eastern ink-wash painting to express reinterpreted allegories of romanticism. Chung addresses nature's awe-inspiring, beautiful, sad, and transient qualities within the context of the spirit of the time and abstractness. Every single stroke applied symbolizes the quintessence of nature, or perhaps the spirituality of human beings, while the process is an aspiration for magnificence and eternity. Lately, the artist has been focusing on his attitude toward painting, observing the canvas frame for long hours. By paying less attention to forms and colors and more to the background behind the frame, he revels the attitude and spirit of painting in a more intensive way.
Sen Chung(b.1963) is a Dusseldorf and Seoul-based artist who earned a B.A. in Western Painting at Hongik University, after which he received the Meisterschule and Academiebrief degrees from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany, and an M.A. in Painting at the Chelsea College of Art & Design. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions at Ilwoo Space (2024), Wooson Gallery (2021), OCI Art Museum (2020), Osthaus Museum (2020), Ilmin Museum of Art (2020), and more. He has participated in the residency programs at the International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York and the Anderson Center, Minnesota, and his works are part of various collections, including those of Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank Collection, Kahnweiler Foundation, Ilmin Museum of Art, Landesgallery Linz, and the Foundation for Culture of Rhine Neckar and many more.
연필과 오일파스텔을 사용해 자연의 모습을 선과 색으로 그려내는 샌정은 미니멀한 형태와 추상적인 붓 터치, 절제된 색채를 통해 그리기의 행위와 회화의 본질을 탐구한다. 그의 작품은 동양 수묵화에서 영향을 받은 무채색에 가까운 단색조의 배경에 기하학적 형상과 색채를 더해, 재해석된 로맨티시즘의 알레고리를 표현한다. 작가는 자연에 대한 경외감, 아름다움, 슬픔, 그리고 덧없음을 담아내며, 이를 시대정신과 추상성 속에서 나타내고자 한다. 그가 그리는 한 획, 한 획은 자연 본연의 모습 또는 인간 정신성을 상징하며, 그 과정은 장엄함과 영원함을 추구 하는 시간으로 볼 수 있다. 최근 샌정은 캔버스 화면을 오랜 시간 관찰하며 그림을 대하는 자신의 태도에 집중하고 있다. 그는 형상과 색보다 화면 뒤에 깔린 배 경에 주목하고 있으며, 이를 통해 그의 작업은 회화적 태도와 정신성을 더욱 집약적으로 드러낸다.
샌정(b.1963)은 현재 뒤셀도르프와 서울에서 거주 및 활동하고 있으며, 홍익대학교 서양화과 학사를 졸업하였다. 이후 독일 쿤스트 아카데미 뒤셀도르프에서 마이스터슐러 와 아카데미 브리프 학위를 수여, 첼시 컬리지 오브 아트&디자인에서도 회화 전공으로 석사 학위를 수여받았다. 일우스페이스(2024), 우손갤러리(2021), OCI 미술관 (2020), 오스타우스 미술관(2020), 일민미술관(2008) 등에서 개인전과 다수의 그룹전을 가졌다. ISCP (International Studio & Curatorial Program, NY), 앤더스센터 레지던시(USA) 등에서 입주 작가로 참여, 모건 스탠리, 도이치 뱅크 컬렉션, 칸바일러 파운데이션, 일민미술관, 란데스갤러리 린쯔, Foundation for Culture of Rhein Neckar 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
